Meet the Norwegian entrepreneur from Purl Alpaca Design

kari-helene_raneFrom early childhood in Norway, Kari-Helene Rane was surrounded by knitting. Both her grandmothers and her mum knitted and throughout her childhood, she was never without lovely, warm garments. It was however her sister’s 1980s jumper (made out of leftover yarn) that provided early inspiration for possibilities within knitwear design.

Kari-Helene moved to England in 2002, attended Kingston University and in 2005 she graduated with a B.A. (Hons) Degree in Fashion Design. Her final collection primarily consisted of knitted garments and it was awarded runner up in The Knitted Textile Student Award in October 2005. After a few years of freelance work for various designers and publishers such as Daniel Blake, Modernist and MQ Publications, Kari-Helene met Tracy in 2007 and the Purl Alpaca story started.

Alpaca wool is recognized as one of the most luxurious fabrics in the world, known for its warmth, lightweight, durability and softness. Alpaca wool has a unique luxury feel and its all natural.
Purl Alpaca Designs shop offers a full range of knitting kits, patterns and yarn as well as a selection of “Made to order”.
Below is a photo by one happy customer, that have knitted the dress in the softest alpaca wool.
We love the nostalgic and romantic style!

Norwegian Designer Kristine Five Melvær Nordic cool reinvented

Norwegian Designer Kristine Five Melvær investigates the subject of object communication, bridging the disciplines of product design and graphic design. The result from this emerging design talent is Nordic cool -reinvented.

Inspired by the Cobbler’s Lamp from the 17th Century, the Liquid Light series is part of the Still Life project. Liquid Light is a birch wood plate holding a glass carafe and a brass socket for a candle. When the carafe is filled with liquid and the light is lit, the carafe works as a lens that amplifies the light, giving a glowing light, creating the perfect evening atmosphere.

Bloom is a series of three table lamps inspired by forms from the nature. Like big drops, the shades may be associated with buds, fruits or water, while the seams in the construction are reminiscent of fibers. The steel structures have different heights, which contribute to the organic feel.

The Spring lamps stretch towards the ceiling like living flowers, the tallest measuring two metres. When the lamp is turned on, the flesh-toned textile changes from opaque to transparent, giving the impression of a glowing forest.

Like fruits or plant bulbs, the Obelix vases look like they are growing upwards, telling the growth story of the flowers inside. The quality of the lacquer creates rough and smooth surfaces mimicking the skin of plants, fruits and vegetables. The juicy colours and brave stripes make the vases stand out with or without flowers.

Among Haaland’s latest paintings, inspiration is drawn from the architecture of the Mediterranean and of European cities and the history of sports. When it comes to the city pictures the different building facades are given special attention, often seen as reflections of the windows of the stores. Over the past years he has concentrated on reflections from areas of London.
